Ronald Edmonds Learning Center M.S. 113 Home of Scholars and Champions
www.relc113.com Mission Statement: To motivate our urban children and develop tomorrow’s leaders through an accelerated curriculum of fine and performing arts, science, and technology. Ronald Edmonds Learning Center is part of Instructional Region 8 and is located in the Clinton Hill/Fort Greene Section of Brooklyn. We are pioneers of the Effective Schools Movement, with the philosophy that “Every Child Can Learn”. We utilize the Comer School Development process, as designed by Dr. James P. Comer, which includes effective leadership, community/ corporate partnerships, productive collaboration with all stakeholders (administrators, teachers, students, parents, and staff) and a shared vision with a clear mission in the community.
LIU ADVANTAGE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM
www.liu.edu The Long Island University (LIU Brooklyn) Advantage Afterschool Program is a DYCD-OST partnership with Ronald Edmonds Learning Center (Middle School 113) dedicated to serving youth and community residents. As a city leader in preparing youth for college and careers, LIU Advantage Afterschool works with the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center students, their families, and educators to identify, recognize, challenge, engage, and help students reach their highest potential. From 2:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday, LIU Advantage Afterschool seeks to strategically support Ronald Edmonds Learning Center (Middle School 113) to offer high quality services through academic enrichment, educational support, physical well-being, leadership and community engagement. Working with ages 11-13, LIU Advantage Afterschool is a free program committed to providing services and programs to meet the individual needs of students. The Office of Institutional Advancement and Student Affairs, with support from LIU students, is committed to ongoing support and growth of the LIU Advantage Afterschool Program and MS 113.
America's Promise Alliance advocates to decrease the drop-out rates in America's High Schools.
www.americaspromise.org In an effort to reduce America's high school dropout rates, the Alliance introduced the Dropout Prevention Campaign in April 2008. More than 35 summits have been held in cities nationwide - bringing together more than 14,000 mayors and governors, business owners, child advocates, school administrators, students and parents to develop workable solutions and action plans. There have been 105 summits-one in all 50 states and 55 cities.
FIRST uses cooperation and competition to inspire young people interested in science and technology.
www.first.org MANCHESTER, N.H., Oct. 18, 2010 FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a not-for-profit organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology, announced that the highest-winning robotics teams from the 2010 FIRST Championship were recognized for their achievements during the White House Science Fair. President Obama saluted the work of FIRST.
FIRST seeks to promote a philosophy of teamwork and collaboration among engineers and encourages competing teams to remain friendly, helping each other out when necessary. Terms frequently applied to this ethos are Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition; terms coined by Woodie Flowers that support respect towards one's competitors and integrity in one's actions. First is partnering with V-ELMS to tap those mentees interested in science and technology.

The Center also has a wide variety of resources available, including a career library located in 1303 James Hall and various online tools such as career videos,OptimalResume, eRecruiting, Internships.com and the career assessment MyPlan, to name a few. Approved Interns serve as resources for V-ELMS in the developmental areas of technical, administrative, art design, and graphics.
