Teamed by Learning Styles
A QUALIFIED AND SCREENED MENTOR WILL BE ASSIGNED
- Matching is done individually with mentors to mentees according to their learning styles. The premise is simple: match the learning style of the mentee to the mentor, because they learn similarly, to promote clearer communication. The mentor will guide the mentee in "how to remember, learn and analyze".
- The Mentee/Mentor team will communicate at least once a week via the closed circuit email set-up. Their communications are about the academic work the mentee is signed up for and the assigned weekly 'essays' V-ELMS' has chosen from its curriculum.
- Mentees will perform STEM projects during the course of the year. Tutors will assist in this process.
HOW WE SERVE - THROUGH Mentoring

- V-ELMS believes that the key to the mentee's success is the mentoring relationship between the client (mentee) and the assigned mentor (volunteer), who are matched by a number of factors. These factors are: similar 'learning styles', interests and gender.
- Most mentors have had no previous experience mentoring. There will be three mandated workshops by V-ELMS to build mentors' skills. The mentor's motivation will be their positive influence in someone else's life.
- V-ELMS mentee/mentor team must commit to a one-year contract, with extensions possible. After an initial meeting, weekly guidance is provided through e-mail via V-ELMS' and a once a month face-to-face social/educational get-together.

What DOES A Mentor Do?
Illustrator: a GUIDE who models effective two-way communication and feedback in order to improve the performance of the mentee.
Insight: a COACH who reinforces learning, offering valuable perspective on progress achieved.
Counsel: a SUPPORTER who exhibits enthusiasm and provides constructive feedback.
